Musings of the Day

I think I’m getting addicted to the music in the boy’s day care. I nurse him there every morning before coming into work, so I’m sort of a captive audience to whatever they happen to be playing. The classic example was Christmas songs in Chinese… in September. But there’s one album that I’m totally hooked on, and I’ve discovered I’m not alone. It’s called Learning Basic Skills Through Music, Volume 1 and it’s apparently an all-time classic. I’m currently restraining myself from buying it because I can’t even pretend at this point (with the boy only 3 months old) that it’s for him.

Speaking of keeping myself from buying things… we are ultra-broke at the moment, which is a serious bummer. Here’s an example. Today is my husband and my three-year wedding anniversary. Last year, we whooped it up in Manhattan, eating at the fancy Aquagrill in SoHo, finishing up our meal with $12 glasses of port (2 each!). It all resulted, actually, in the conception of the boy. This year, now that the boy is more than a twinkle in our eyes, we’re planning to go to the chain Macaroni Grill. We didn’t even get each other presents, or cards, or anything. To be fair, we have been completely busy, what with the baby and all. Plus we just bought the house and are trying to get it in order. Also, we finally paid our (substantial) 2004 tax bill, which had to be done. It’s just depressing sometimes. Trying to keep a positive outlook and remember what’s important.

Anyway, Macaroni Grill has whole wheat pasta and DH likes it. It also would seem to be baby-friendly so the boy will be welcome. I’ve been doing pretty good on Core but also straying around the edges a bit. The other day, I tried a macaroni and cheese recipe I found on the WW message boards, and (because I couldn’t find whole wheat macaroni), I used the Barilla Plus pasta, which I later discovered wasn’t Core. I’ve also been using lower-fat ground beef, though I’m unsure of exactly the fat percentage (it’s whatever we got at CostCo). Also, I have used jar marinara sauce. I’ve made sure it doesn’t have added sugar, but it might still have more oil than I’d be allowed. Also, it’s very definitely processed, which is sort of against the Core philosophy. With all of these little “cheats,” Core has been fairly easy to manage, but will I actually lose weight this way? If I don’t, will I be able to cut back and drop these habits if necessary? I guess I will, if I have to.

Breakfast this a.m. was shredded wheat, a banana, and skim milk. Coffee, of course.

You may notice I’m blogging quite voluminously today. I think it’ll suit me better to be more open and wide-ranging in my entries, both to share more honestly and to put my food issues into context.
